It is quite normal to expect people to want to look and feel good so this might explain why we think anti-ageing skin care products will help. It makes up about a quarter of the total protein content of structural protein found in skin. Collagen is related to other anti-ageing substances in the body called anti-oxidants.

Vitamin C is probably one of the better known anti-oxidants in use today but the debate about the daily quota required is ongoing. Unfortunately all skin care treatments that use vitamin C have the problem of atmospheric oxidization to contend with once the product is exposed to the air.

Other skin care treatments which mimic the effects of vitamin C are being tried all the time which are hoped to be more stable in the atmosphere and also cheaper to produce. These new anti-oxidant products are not quite as good as vitamin C although other naturally occurring compounds, vitamin E and lipoic acid can achieve the same effect.

Acai is a great anti-aging fruit. Due to the high level of omegas, it helps with the health of the skin.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble anti-oxidant and is found in human blood, it helps build resistance against infection like cancer. Another, lipoic acid is in every cell of our body and is used to generate energy for us to live but also helps reduce and reverse the skin’s ageing process.

Phytochemicals aren’t produced by the body but are extracted from a number of plants and used in many anti-ageing skin care products to combat the signs of ageing. Like lipoic acid, phytochemicals help reduce the occurrence of cancers such as prostate, breast and colon cancers.

It has also been discovered that there are anti-ageing benefits to vitamins B5, B6 and B12. This just goes to highlight just how complex and far reaching the whole field of anti-ageing skin care products is and why so much more research is required.

Although current regimes are effective, there are still many challenges to finding better and more efficient ways to combat the effects of time. The amount of research going on in this field will undoubtedly bring results in time, hopefully bringing down the cost of these anti-ageing skin care products in addition to increasing their reliability.

However, man-made skin care regimes should be used only as a supplement. What proportion of the population actually eat healthily, take plenty of exercise, drink sufficient water and obtain restful and regular sleep?
